| Background | HEL cell is a lymphoblast-like cell line derived from a 30-year-old white male; The patient has a malignant erythrocyte leukemia that occurs naturally and can induce globulin synthesis. HEL cells were negative for Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigen and had no surface immunoglobulins or cytoplasmic immunoglobulins. HEL cells express HLA antigen (HLA-A3, AW32, BW35), β-2 small globulin, and a certain proportion of cells also express La antigen. HEL cells provide a model for studying erythrocyte differentiation and globulin gene expression, which is similar to hemophilia in mice. |
